Wretched were, and still are to this day, one of the most influential bands in the Italian punk scene. Together with other great Italian bands, such as Negazione, Indigesti, Raw Power, Impact, and countless others, Wretched incarnated the fury of Italy's punk scene of the 80s. As a result, their music and, most importantly, their message continue to inspire people even today.
Wretched formed around 1980 in the city of Milan. The first lineup was composed of Gian Mario on vocals, Gigi on guitar, Fabio on bass, and Giancarlo on drums. In 1982, Wretched unleashes their music onto the punk scene with their famous split with Indigesti, another great band from Milan. The band sang rigorously in Italian, as the members found it easier to express their message by singing in their native language. Through their songs, Wretched wanted to deliver a strong anti-war message and throughout their carreer, the band always took a pacifist stance. The band also stood by their DIY ethics by self producing all their records on their label, Chaos Productions. Wretched were also one of the protagonists of the infamous Virus squat in Milan, which was one of the most, if not the most, important center in the Italian punk scene. In 1983 came their first EP "In Nome del Loro Potere Tutto e` Stato Fatto." During that same year, the band lineup went through some changes as Daniele replaced Gigi on guitar, and Crema replaced Giancarlo on drums. With the new lineup, the band recorder their second EP "Finira` Mai," which lead the way to their much beloved first LP "Libero di Vivere, Libero di Morire," which was released in 1984. The band's message and powerful music was quickly spreading throughout the world, as Wretched started to appear in numerous international compilations; most notably, Wretched appeared on the sensational compilation "P.E.A.C.E.", which featured bands from all over the world. In 1985 came another lineup change, as Zambo became the new drummer. With this lineup, the band released the LP "La Tua Morte Non Aspetta" in 1986, which showed the band had started mixing a bit of heavy metal in their sound. In 1988 Wretched released their last record ever "In Controluce," as shortly after the band split up due to internal problems and Gian Mario's shredded vocal chords.
